WSU’s Boonshoft School of Medicine Wilderness Expo back for 2010
Physicians from the Department of Emergency Medicine at Wright State’s Boonshoft School of Medicine will give presentations and hold small group workshops on wilderness safety, preparation and survival. These sessions are designed not only for sports enthusiasts but also for anyone who ventures outdoors.

  • Stings, Bites and Strikes in the Wild

Dr. Springer will discuss some of the many dangerous land and sea animals that adventure-seekers might encounter. Learn what to look out for, and what to do if one of these creatures tries to ruin your day.  Dr. Springer is full-time faculty at the Wright State University Department of Emergency Medicine, and serves as the department’s Sports Medicine Coordinator.  He is also a mentor and participant in tactical medicine and self-defense training, as well as an avid hiker

  • Infectious Diseases in the Wild

Dr. Calvert will discuss common zoonoses, parasites, viruses, and diseases affecting travelers.  He will also cover vaccinations, treatments, and other steps you can take to prevent illness that may ruin your trip.
Dr. Calvert is resident at the Wright State University Department of Emergency Medicine, and a Captain in the US Air Force Medical Corps.  He is an active member of the Wilderness Medical Society, and has contributed to their publications, as well as attended their Wilderness Medicine course in the Smoky Mountains.

  • High Altitude Medicine

Program Description:  Dr. Hixson will discuss preparing for, avoiding, and treating illness that results from high altitude adventures.  From Acute Mountain Sickness to brain swelling and death; learn what to think about ahead of time, what to look out for, and if all else fails, what to do if it happens to you or your climbing companion.  Dr. Hixson is a resident at the Wright State University Department of Emergency medicine, as well as an avid hiker, biker, and mountain climber.  

  • Wilderness ABCs and Packing Your Med Kit

Dr. Pickett will cover the basics in wilderness first aid, including triage decisions, simple things you can do to try and save a life, and how to prepare for the worst.  Dr. Pickett is an emergency physician at the Miami Valley Hospital who trained at the Wright State University Emergency Medicine program.   He is also a Captain in the US Army Reserve Medical Corps, and an EMT –P/T. He is active in medical education, as well as tactical medicine; medical support for police SWAT teams.

  • Wilderness Expo Activity Stations

1.) C-Spine immobilization; how to secure a possibly broken neck in the outdoors
2.) Field-expedient litters; how to carry someone to help, with stuff you brought along already
3.) Reducing Fractures; how to help save some limbs while you’re in the back country
4.) Packing a med kit; see what goes in it, and how to use it if you need it
