Carriage Hill Historical Farm Steam Engine to visit the 2nd Street Market

Stop by the outdoor Market and see Carriage Hill MetroPark Historical Farm steam engine in action on Sunday, July 21 as it steams local sweet corn provided to you by our legacy farmer vendor, Russell Garber of Garber Farms.

The steam engine was an integral part of life in the late 1800’s. This steam engine was built in 1896 by Hagerstown Steam Engine & Machine Company. Questions about the steam engine are welcome, and free ears of steamed corn will be available for everyone to enjoy during Sunday Market hours from 11 AM to 3 PM.

National Farmers Market Week Celebration

Be sure to continue to support all the wonderful local farmers markets and farm stands in southwest Ohio, including the 2nd Street Market, during National Farmers Market week from August 4 – August 10, and all season long.

More than ever, we need places where people can come together. Farmers markets are designed in partnership with the people they serve, creating a space where market operators, farmers, shoppers, and neighbors can collaborate to meet the evolving needs of our communities. According to data from the USDA, Farmers who sell directly to consumers:

  • Experience lower rates of farm business failure or bankruptcy than growers who sell exclusively wholesale.
  • Are more likely to continue farming than those who do not.

COMMUNITY NEWS

July is Park and Recreation Month, a month-long celebration of the many ways park and recreation professionals across the country foster a sense of belonging in their community by providing welcoming and inclusive programs, essential services for all ages and abilities, and safe, accessible spaces to build meaningful connection. We feel the 2nd Street Market fits perfectly with the theme of this year’s celebration: Where You Belong.

Five Rivers MetroParks, including the staff at the Market, are dedicated to providing a safe, welcoming environment for everyone who visits. Did you know that food insecurity has continued to rise in our community post covid? According to the Map the Meal Gap data gathered by the Feeding America organization, 1 in 7 people in our area were food insecure in 2022, up from 1 in 8 in 2021. The Food Bank confirmed that this number is likely even higher today. One way the Market provides for the community is by offering food access programs, like SNAP and Produce Perks, for those among us who find themselves in need.

If you or anyone you know who is receiving SNAP benefits who wants to provide more fresh local food for their family, please let them know the Market offers the free state incentive program, Produce Perks, which provides a dollar-for-dollar match up to a $25 when they utilize their SNAP benefits at the Market. For more information, please contact the Market staff at 937-228-2088 or marketinfo@metroparks.org.
